Badger

The Badger is a relatively common mammal species in the UK with an estimated population of 250,000. Population densities can be as high as 25 per km2 have been recorded in optimal habitat, the South West of England holds the highest population densities within the UK.
Badgers are legally protected under the ‘Protection of Badgers Act 1992’ under the Act it is an offence to kill, injure, interfere or take a Badger. It is also an offence to damage or interfere with an occupied sett.
Badger setts are comprised of tunnels and underground chambers that are visible above ground as single holes or groups of holes. Entrance holes are broader than they are high, oval in shape and surrounded by loose soil. Typical Badger habitat includes a mix of deciduous woodland and pasture.

To the untrained eye Fox earths and Rabbit warrens can sometimes be mistaken for Badger setts.
A badger survey will typically include the survey area and about 30m of habitat outside that area.
The survey will look to identify
-
Latrines
-
Setts
-
Paths between setts
-
Paths leading to feeding areas
-
Scratching posts
-
Hair traces
-
Foot prints
Morelia Ecology will provide a report regarding the presence or likely absence of Badgers in the survey area along with advice on the legal implications for the land owner.
